Fiber Optic Rotary Joint Provides
New Solutions For Data Transfer

Poly-Scientific has announced the release of its new Fiber Optic Rotary Joint (FORJ). The FO-5704 is a multi-pass fiber optic rotary joint that allows optical signals to pass from a stationary structure to a rotating mechanism in a fiber optic system. The assembly is available with 2 to 7 optical passes and a combination of single or multi-mode fibers. It is a fully bi-directional unit designed in a small package size that allows light transmission in both directions simultaneously. The physical dimensions of the product remain the same -- regardless of the number of channels selected.

Today's digital communications systems are straining the bandwidth limits of conventional technology. A key advantage of optical fiber is that it is not affected by magnetic fields, nor does it produce any interfering ones. Electrical cross talk and signal quality degrade as frequency limits are pushed higher by increased bandwidth requirements. Optical channels now solve these demanding requirements. Typical applications include robotics, medical systems, milling machines, ROVs and cable reels.

The FO-5704 is available with 2 to 7 single or multi-mode channels. The rugged design makes it suitable for demanding environments. Operating temperature range is -200 C to 800 C. In addition to the on-axis FORJ products, Poly-Scientific also provides off-axis units to accommodate applications where a centerline of rotation is not available.

Poly-Scientific supplies fiber optic rotary systems, including rotary joints, transmitters, receivers, couplers and multiplexers to simplify integration and reduce the complexity of having to work with different component vendors. The FORJ is combined with Litton Poly-Scientific slip rings for a single source solution for optical and electrical signal transfer.

Poly-Scientific designs and manufacturers a complete line of motion products, including motors, drives, slip rings, actuators and fiber optic rotary components for commercial, industrial, aerospace and military applications.
